                                                                                                                                                   August 2003

A Note from DG Carl:

Hello Again!

Everything is moving right along and we’re building up some momentum.  So now I think it's time to talk about our District theme, “Back To Basics:  A B C”, for my year as your District Governor.  We’re going to focus on three basic elements of Lionism:  Attitude, Building, and Commitment.

We all need to have a good attitude to look at the positive side of all situations and problems that we are faced with.  This positive attitude helps us while building on what we did in the past and working to improve on the present.  Last year we began to rebuild on some of the lost traditions of our clubs.  Everyone thought that we were making big changes, but we really weren't -- we were just reaching back to where Lions were having FUN.  Now that we have started “building a better tomorrow”, we also need to start building stronger commitments to our clubs, our District, and to Lions Clubs International.

We can show that commitment by stepping up our recruitment efforts for new members at the club level; supporting our fellow Lions within District 19C by helping each other with our projects; and by forgetting our small community boundaries and working for the good of all people worldwide.

I have drained my brain for this time.  We will talk again next month.

Text Box: NEW CABINET POSITIONS

Treasurer:  IPDG Jim LaBelle

This position was approved at the 2003 District 19C Spring Conference.  Now we’ll have funds available to pay up front for District administrative projects, such as printing the annual district rosters and all the handbooks for officer training.  There will also be a financial report provided at each cabinet meeting, as well as at the end of each fiscal year.

Women’s Membership Recruitment:                              PZC Barbara Ellis

This position was created at the Annual Convention in Denver last month.  It’s so new the guidelines are still being written!  The focus will be to attract more women to become Lions worldwide, by providing programs that are of interest to them. Of course, this is not an area where we have a problem in District 19C – we have a history of women in leadership positions, as well as a large number of women Lions working hard at the club level.

RECENT NEWS:

Banner Passing on August 4th was a rousing success, with about 100 Lions in attendance.  There were also two exchange students as special guests.  Matias Huovinen, from Vääksy, Finland, was hosted by Frank & Sheila Pearce.  IPDG Jim & Carol LaBelle’s guest was Manami Sakairi, from Tochigi, Japan.

The food was good, the fellowship was great, Jan McCaffrey’s leadership program was well done, the banners were successfully passed, and the speeches were short!  And those quiet and reserved Lions of Spanapark did a fine job with the raffle.  The door prize, a tree motif quilt made by Frances Freeland, was won by Justin Comeaux from the Lacey Sunrise Lions Club.

Unfortunately, the evening ended on a sour note when it was discovered that Zone C-1’s banner had been pilfered.  This caused some bad feelings after an otherwise upbeat evening.  The banners represent the history of each zone and would be difficult (and expensive) to replace if damaged.  DG Carl’s request to everyone, concerning all banners, is simply “LEAVE ‘EM ALONE”.

Text Box: Another year of expansion for Camp Leo for Children with Diabetes – the best year ever!
This year there were two camps, a 4-day camp for 3rd & 4th graders and a 7-day camp for 5th through 8th graders, totaling 97 happy campers.  Over half received scholarships provided by the generous donations from Lions Clubs.  Each club will be receiving a photo full of smiling faces so grateful for such wonderful support.
Camp Leo’s mission is to provide a camping experience for children where diabetes is the norm rather than the exception.  These kids learn a lot, have a great time, and develop long-term friendships.  Many want to come back next year, so please add Camp Leo to your 2003-2004 club budgets.  THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!!

Text Box: LIONS WE’LL MISS

PZC Howard Braden passed away on July 9th.  He was a very active member of the Eatonville Lions Club, and was a Past President and longtime Treasurer.  Club members could always depend on him to get things done.  Among his many activities, he was the Guiding Lion for the Eatonville Day-break Lions Club.

Lion Lou Vaughn passed away on July 30th.  He was a Past President of the Maple Valley Club as well as Lion of the Year.  If there was a project to be done, Lou was there; if there wasn't a project he found one.  He devoted his time to the food bank, the City of Maple Valley, his Leo Club and the Covington Lions Club which he belonged to at his passing.  Everyone in C-3 knew and loved him.

Text Box: As noted in The Lion Magazine, two District 19C Lions received Membership Key Awards:

Grand Master Key to PCC Bud Dunlap, Eatonville Lions Club

Senior Master Key to PDG Al Lord,
 Tacoma Southeast Lions Club

That means PCC Bud has recruited 50 new Lions and PDG Al has brought in 25.  These two Lions obviously have the positive attitude needed for building membership to show their commitment to Lionism!

CONGRATULATIONS!!

                        MORE NEWS!

Text Box: The Journey for Diabetes, sponsored by Graham Sunrise Lions Club, was moderately successful.  The 10K walk was held in Orting on the Rail Trail on Saturday, July 26th.  The main reason for “moderately successful” is because only about half of C-5 Clubs were represented and very few Clubs from outside our Zone were there.  Even so, we had a very enjoyable day.  PZC Rena Larson & VDG Frank Paul were stationed at the halfway point to hand out water to the walkers.  The weatherman cooperated with a beautiful day.  Orting Lions Club once again did an excellent job on the BBQ chicken luncheon.   Funds collected will help sponsor the Lions Health Screening Van.
