District 19C Newsletter

Carl J. Freeland, District Governor

February 2004

A Note from DG Carl:

We’re counting down the days until our Spring Conference!

We now know when our International speaker and his wife are arriving and that our panels are all set for us to enjoy.  We will be honoring all of our new Lions at the Opening Session, so please encourage all new members to attend the conference (for learning and FUN) so that we can welcome them into our Lions family.  Chairperson Rena Larson still needs some donations to add to our great raffle, so be sure to let her know about your contributions.

At the conference, club delegates will be voting on the candidates running for higher office, along with some changes to our Constitution and Bylaws.  These changes are “house-keeping” in nature, meant to make the wording easier to understand.  Last but not least, let’s have some good fellowship and lots of FUN together!

Also put at the top of your priority lists:  April 17th, The Daffodil Parade.  We will be meeting at the Orting High School by 8:00 am (don’t be late as the buses will be leaving for Tacoma at 8:30 SHARP).  We will head to Tacoma for the first leg of the parade, then on to Puyallup, then Sumner, and then back to Orting for the parade’s finish.  We’ll top off the day’s events with a barbeque dinner at the Orting Lions Clubhouse.  Hope to see you all there!

White Cane Days are fast approaching, so let’s start getting fired up so that we can have a really super turnout and do even better than we did last year.  We will have more about White Cane Days in next month’s newsletter, along with information on our upcoming “Journey for Diabetes”, the Skookumchuck Bike Ride, and Camp Leo for children with diabetes.

Until next month -- see you down the road!
Your District Governor,
Carl J. Freeland

Zone C-4 Mall Experience
February 21-22

Lions and Leos have been invited to set up in the Center Court of the Silverdale Mall.  Information will be available on Lions’ donations and community service.  Clubs will have displays of information, scrapbooks, brochures, and membership applications.

The Poulsbo Lions will provide a prescription reader for eyeglasses.  The Screening Van from the NW Lions Foundation for Sight & Hearing will be there on both days to test for glaucoma, sight, blood pressure, and diabetes.  The Red Cross Bloodmobile will also be there on Saturday.

SAFEWAY HELPS OUT

Safeway has chosen our own Northwest Lions Foundation for Sight & Hearing as February’s “Charity of Choice”.

Each checkstand will have a canister for donations, and all money collected this month will be given to our Foundation.

Please pass the word to friends and relatives so their change can help benefit our Sight & Hearing programs.

Also say thank-you for Safeway’s participation!

Zone C-5 Encounter at the Mall
Saturday, March 27

The clubs of C-5 will be participating in an informational and recruiting booth at the Puyallup South Hill Mall.  They will be promoting Lionism and educating the public about our service to our communities and those in need.  It will also be a chance to find some potential Lions and invite them to serve.

Stop by and show your support (any maybe steal an idea or two)!

STEPPING ABOVE THE CLUB

People join this fine Lions organization for a number of good reasons, far too numerous to list here.  One thing that I have learned in my few years as a Lion is that most members stay in Lions for an entirely different reason.  Why?  Well, most of us really don’t understand what Lions is all about when we sign on the dotted line.

When I first thought about becoming a member, my first thought was, “Those are the eyeglasses people.  I suppose that I could help with whatever it is they do with them.” As we all learn quite soon, eyeglasses recycling and purchasing is but a small part of what “Lions Do”.

Soon after becoming a Lions member, I was put to work on a project committee and my reasons for remaining in Lions changed.  What really made this change possible is that I was blessed with the mentors and leaders who got me involved and kept my interest.

After a couple of years as a Lion I was asked if I would consider holding a club office.  “Who, me?  Why should I get involved as an officer in my club?  What do I have to offer?  Sounds like a lot of extra work to me.”  Once again I was blessed with a strong mentor who did not use the standard line of, “Well, someone has to do it and it’s your turn”.  Instead he said, “I have noticed your leadership qualities and this would be a chance for you to develop them.”  Can you believe that!  He thinks I have leadership skills.

A couple of years and a couple of club offices later, the same mentor said to me, “Have you ever considered Stepping Above the Club”?  As a matter of fact, I had not.

Well, a few years have passed and I am now asking the District membership for permission to serve as their Governor.  All because I was blessed with leaders and mentors who cared.

We seem to be constantly searching for someone to serve as club secretary, club president or to serve above the club level as Zone Chair and beyond.  Please believe me when I say that the rewards reaped from Stepping Above the Club far exceed the effort and resources expended.  I am a richer person for having served as Zone Chair, Cabinet Secretary/Treasurer and your Vice District Governor.  Not that I have performed the tasks better or even as good as those before me, but rather that I have had the experiences of serving.

So my message to you is simple.  There are many ways to serve above the club level.  Your Zone Chair needs committee chairs.  Your District and Multiple District are always looking for members to serve on committees.

When someone comes to you and asks, “Have you ever considered Stepping Above The Club?”, don’t just say no and walk away.  Before you reject the entire idea, take some time to reach down inside and do a little soul-searching.  You have much to offer as a leader and much more to gain from the experience.

Vice District Governor Frank

RECYCLING CENTER FOR EYEGLASSES

For some months now we have been working on establishing an Official Lions Recycling Center for Eyeglasses here in the Northwest.   We now have the necessary application forms for Corporate and Foundation status, as well as official Lions status from Lions Clubs International.  In addition, we have drawn up a Constitution and set of Bylaws and have a tentative site location in the Olympia/Lacey area.

It has been decided to make this a District 19C project.  In doing this, the proposed Constitution and Bylaws call for a 9-member Board of Directors with one director from each Zone and three at large.  If you are interested in serving on this board or assisting in the planning process, please contact PZC Bob Pinson at rrpinson@att.net or (360) 493-2020.

YOUTH EXCHANGE ESSAY WINNER

Congratulations to Lauren Sauser, a student at Yelm High School, for her winning essay, World Peace--What It Means To Me.  An excerpt: “One person can change a community, one person can change the face of a nation, and one person can change the world.  I will do my part and it is my hope that others will do the same. You should respect all life and recognize that violence comes in many forms. I will not let myself be drawn into thinking that war is the only solution and I will not isolate myself, but keep myself open to new ideas and cultures. Creating an environment where others feel comfortable, speak freely, and stand up against violence will inspire courage and hope in others. Valuing my own life and the lives of others will help me fulfill my potential. I will never give up on my personal dreams for the future, even if they seem impossible.”
