District 19C Newsletter

Carl J. Freeland, District Governor

May 2004

I have been trying to outline my thoughts for the last few days so that I don’t forget anything that I want to pass on to you.

District Leadership Training:  The training this year is better than ever.  One of the big factors is that we are using the same presenters each time so that everyone hears and learns the same thing.  We are also making CD’s of the training so that clubs can have a refresher course at a later time during the year.

Membership:  I have been asking all year long for clubs to report any member drops on the 1st of January or the 1st of July so that the district has time to bring in new members to replace the ones we lose.  But I am still seeing a lot of drops on the MMR’s, so I’m inclined to believe that we will end our year with a huge minus instead of a plus.

On the brighter side, we have some fun times coming up!  We’ll be visiting with lots of old friends in Yakima for the MD19 Annual Convention.  Then a few weeks later we head off to Detroit, where we hope to connect with my twin Governor from France and some of our fellow DG’s from India.  After seeing all these Lions friends, we will be home just long enough to wash clothes and repack our bags, then we’re off to Reno for the USA/Canada Lions Leadership Forum.  For those of you who haven’t registered for Reno, you can go on line to: http://usacanadalionsforum.org/onlineregistration.html.

In between all this good fun you can join other Lions to march in parades around our District.   Upcoming events include the Armed Forces Day parade in Bremerton, the Fathoms of Fun on June 26th in Port Orchard, and Whaling Days in Silverdale on the last weekend of July.  Also coming up are the Journey for Diabetes, Skookumchuck Bike Challenge, Rainier’s Bluegrass Festival, and Yelm’s Prairie Days.  Plus our friends in Kent put on Cornucopia Days, which includes another parade for us to participate in.

Come along with Frances and me and we’ll all have some great times together before my days as your District Governor come to an end.  Let’s make Lions really visible around our District this summer.  Good Visiting and Great Fun to all of you!

Your District Governor
Carl J. Freeland

NOTE TO CABINET MEMBERS:  There will be a short cabinet meeting at the District luncheon on Saturday, May 29th, at the Annual Convention in Yakima.

SKOOKUMCHUCK BIKE CHALLENGE

Volunteers are still needed for the following:

Motorcyclists to patrol the courses

Monitors at street corners

Bike maintenance & repair person

Please call Bob Johnson, (253) 759-5601

“OPENING EYES” PROGRAM

This year’s Special Olympics will be held at Fort Lewis on June 5th & 6th.  Volunteers are still needed to help with the LCIF program “Opening Eyes”.  Athletes are given eye exams and glasses are provided, in most cases, on the spot.  This can be the first time some of these folks have seen clearly in years!

Last year, 187 athletes were examined and 57 pairs of glasses and 23 pairs of sport goggles were dispensed.  In addition, five participants were found to have significant eye problems and were given referrals to ophthalmologists for further treatment.

Volunteers are still needed, both eye-care professionals and general helper Lions.  If you can help out, please contact Dr. Erick Hartman at (253) 565-2020 or Lion Brenda Shaw at (253) 848-1587.

Passenger Wanted!

PZC Frances Challender is driving to the Annual Convention in Yakima and is looking for some company.  It’s much more fun to share the ride!  Need a lift?

Farewell to Lion Earle Berger

Lion Earle Berger, an active member of the Tacoma Downtown Lions Club, lost his fight with cancer on April 27th.  He was a 50-year member of his club, and also belonged to the Tacoma Elks Lodge, the American Legion and the Eagles.  A celebration of his life was held May 5th.  Donations may be made to the Tacoma Downtown Lions Club for their sight program.
Lion Earle will be greatly missed.

COVINGTON LIONS CLUB COMEBACK

C-3 ZC Joey Gomes reports that this club is roaring back into action after having been placed on “Status Quo” earlier this year.  That’s great news!!
