A Note from DG Carl:

Hello again!

Your LEMPR Team has been hard at work for our district, and we are beginning to see some good results.  This year we’ve been working toward starting two new clubs in District C and a “plus 1” in membership for each of our clubs.  We were at -62 members a couple of months ago, but the last report shows that number is headed in a positive direction.  Keep up the good work!  Let’s not forget to focus on retaining our current members, as well as recruiting new ones.

It’s not too soon to start planning for this spring’s Daffodil Parade in Tacoma, Puyallup, Sumner, and Orting.  We’d like to have at least two members from each club in the parade on April 17th.  This is really a fun day for all who take part.  An impressive part of the Lions entry, our Sight and Hearing Van will be in the parade with us.  Orting is the last leg of the route, and when we finish the parade there will be a BBQ and spaghetti dinner for everyone who participated.

At our Spring Conference this year we will have a pilot program for club brochures.  The winner will be the Zone Chair who has the highest percentage of clubs participating in the Brochure Contest.

The official club visits and other functions that we have attended so far this year have given us a lot of fond memories, and Frances and I are looking forward to all the visits still ahead of us.

Text Box: Tenino Lion Harold Vassar received his Senior Master Key, as reported in the November issue of The Lion magazine.  That means he’s responsible for sponsoring 25 new members – good job, Lion Harold!

Puyallup Valley Lions Club Secretary Don Fankhauser recently received an award from Kiwanis International.  The "Everyday Heroes Make Things Happen" award was presented to him by the local Kiwanis Club for his continuing dedication to the community.  Lion Don is a retired schoolteacher and continues his service to youth and his community through the Puyallup United Methodist Church and Job's Daughters.  When you see a proud Lion wearing a medal with a big red "K" on it, shake his hand

Text Box:                                                             WOMEN IN LIONS

The new program that International President Dr. Lee and the International Board have put forth for this year has caused quite a stir everywhere in our Multiple District.

First it was called Women Recruitment and Development.  Then, at the USA/Canada Forum in Portland, it was presented as Women's Participation and Involvement.  I like this title much better.

Foremost, I like to think of Lionism as being without gender.  We are LIONS all and should not be broken in groups, female and male.  Also, this program is not aimed at the all-male clubs or for that matter, the female-only Lions Clubs.

North America does not seem to have as big a problem with women in Lions as some other countries.  In some countries in the world, women cannot become members at all and when they do, they are just there as a non-participating member.  This program is to remind clubs that do have women to be sure and actively involve them and let them participate in all club activities.

Clubs in MD-19 and our own district have women who are very actively involved on every level.  However, food for thought, take a look and make sure that these women are getting the same exposure as the male members.  Do they have experience in training, doing presentations, making decisions and following through or are they just title-holders?   These are healthy questions and should be considered in a positive mode.

There has been some controversy about the waivers that are in effect from November 1, 2003 to June 30, 2004.  These waivers are for women only.  If a woman joins a new club as a charter member, her charter fee is waived.  If a woman joins an existing club during this time, her entrance fee is waived.  The question has come up if this is being fair to the male members.  My response to this is, look at this as a recruitment tool.  Membership is membership, no matter what we use to recruit.

Instead of taking this program as a negative, I suggest to all LIONS to look upon this in a positive way and use it to the advantage of your club.  I am here to help in any way that I can serve your club.

Just think, every member we take in is another pair of hands to honor our slogan, WE SERVE.

Text Box: News from District 103

DG Carl’s “twin”, Jean Vilanova, DG of Ile de France Est (Eastside of Paris & suburbs), sent us a copy of his September magazine du district, which was a very high-quality version of a monthly newsletter.  Relying on her high school French and a translator website, Editor Jacqueline gleaned the following information.

DG Jean and his wife, Elise, attended the International Convention in Denver, and both wrote very nice articles about their visit.  It was a long trip, culminating in arriving in Denver to find they were missing some luggage!  However, their spirits stayed high as they took in the sights of Denver and were warmly welcomed by all the Lions they met while there.   DG Jean was very impressed with the five days of training the group received as future District Governors.  He also proudly wrote about the 2nd place award the French delegation received in the parade.

Mrs. Vilanova noted the beauty of Denver -- the contrast of a small church surrounded by huge buildings, streets bordered by trees, and the city’s location amid the majestic Rockies.

Also along for the trip was their grandson, Arnaud.  His highlights included the flight over Greenland, the Lions parade, making two new friends from Luxembourg, the presentation of flags from around the world, and participating in the French entry for a talent show.  He managed to have a great time, even surrounded by adults!  In fact, he ended his article by saying that he would like to come back to the US next year for the Lions Convention in Detroit.

Other pages in the magazine featured extracts from the DG’s action plan for the year and a photo gallery of his cabinet members.  There were also biographies of the current VDG, their candidate for International Director for 2005-7, and two VDG candidates for next year.

Another article was about their youth exchange program that sponsored 26 students this year.  There was also an ad for a 1-day event featuring demonstrations of Service Dogs and Guide Dogs, as well as announcements from various clubs, including some charter anniversaries.

Looks like Lions are Lions the whole world over!

Text Box: UPDATES/CHANGES

The Puyallup Valley Lions are now meeting at Charlie’s Restaurant, 113 E Main Ave.
The Puyallup Lions Club will also start meeting at Charlie’s in January.
(Anton’s Restaurant has been sold and will be reopening in April as Mama Stortini’s.)

It’s always a good idea to call a club before scheduling a visitation, especially during the upcoming holiday season when meetings may be moved or cancelled.

Please remember to notify DG Carl and Secretary Karen of changes in your club’s meeting places/times!
