A Note from DG Carl:
Well, it's Back To Basics for another month. Frances and I started out in September with visiting some family members we hadn't seen in years, then continued the month with our Lions family. We were able to visit with other Lions we hadn't seen in a while and that we enjoy spending time with.
We had a very productive District Retreat at Ocean Shores, with a good turnout, including the LEMPR team, current Zone Chairpersons and their spouses, and IPDG Jim. PDG Hal Palmer was the Facilitator and he did a great job for us. We came away with some excellent ideas that should bear good results for our clubs in the coming months.
To top off a lot of hard work, we enjoyed our MD-19 Fall Forum in Lewiston, Idaho. We attended some panels that dealt with a variety of problems that our clubs may face. A most productive panel raised the question “Is your club being Zapped or Sapped?” Do you know the difference?
Golden Ears Days are behind us for this year -- we
will have the results of our efforts in time for next month’s bulletin. Now the planning for our District Spring Conference
will shift into high gear. Remember
this year there is NO limit on luncheon space, so let's make them open all the
room dividers!
That’s all for now, so until next month let's all have some LIONS FUN!

Yours in Lionism,
Your District Governor
Carl J. Freeland

Congratulations to ALL District 19C Lions Clubs on the beginning of what should be another OUTSTANDING Lions
Year and for your contributions to your community. I trust each Lions Club has prepared a budget for 2003-04 and
that a sizeable contribution is earmarked for Lions Clubs International
Foundation (LCIF).
As
the Past International President Kay K. Fukushima stated, donations to non-profits
have dropped sharply as the global economy has slowed; this was very evident
with the LCIF donations for District 19C.
LCIF needs the continued support of ALL Lions. Consider becoming a Contributing Member by donating US$20, US$50
or US$100 – small donations make a BIG difference. Just US$20 can pay for a cataract surgery. Contributing Members receive a distinctive
lapel pin. Look into LCIF’s Legacy
Program. This is a great way to support
LCIF while helping yourself financially through a gift annuity.
However,
the major donation to LCIF is through each Lions Club’s annual contribution –
clubs should consider presenting worthy individual
with Melvin Jones Fellowships and these awards can be spaced out over a
five-year period of time. Individual
Lions should also consider demonstrating their dedication to community service
by choosing to become a Fellow.
As
we have observed the second anniversary of the country’s worst disaster on
September 11, 2001, I want to point out that LCIF stepped up with an immediate
donation of US$100,000 for disaster relief in New York City. LCIF has been doing disaster relief
throughout the world for years but needs all our support to make sure THE LIONS are there in the future.
Any
questions on LCIF, contact your District 19C LCIF Chairperson, PZC Frank
Pearce, at (253) 840-3533 or 2801 20th
St SE, Puyallup, WA 98374-6309 or e-mail: lionpaco@msn.com.

Volunteers are asked to collect
used eyeglasses as they trick-or-treat this Halloween. For free materials and information on how to
get started with your Sight Night collection of used eyeglasses, visit www.sightnight.org. Lions Clubs International sponsors Sight
Night in partnership with LensCrafters Foundation and LensCrafters. It is a spooktakular time, so organize your
volunteers (Lions, Leos, Scouts and other volunteers) to collect! If your group already organizes an event
around Halloween, consider how to promote eyeglass collection by creating a
large pumpkin eyeglass collection receptacle or develop your own unique twist.
A
Note from Cabinet Secretary Karen:
To borrow a page from PR
Chairperson John Doyle’s notebook, let’s talk “communications”.
Not too many years ago,
to send someone a letter, we got out the old Smith Corona type-writer,
stationery, carbon paper, white-out and the little eraser pencil with the brush
on the end. Remember? There was always time to stop and think,
re-read, and make sure this is what you really wanted to say.
Now in the age of instant messaging and e-mail, we
sit at the computer looking at a screen, type in our information, and then push
one button and the message is sent. But
what if we’re upset about something? Before we’ve had a chance to cool down,
our message is sent and we’ve forgotten it’s not just technology, it’s going
out to a real person with real feelings.
Let’s remember our communications are a personal reflection on each of
us and our clubs. Let’s think before we
push that “SEND” button.
When we receive e-mail, a
short reply is good. It lets the sender
know the information has been received.
Even a simple “Thank You” or “Good Job” is great. Then we know our e-mails are not going out
into a black hole.
Happy e-
mailing!
