Carl J.
Freeland, District Governor
September 2003
A Note from DG Carl:
We are
off and running again! It will soon be
time for the USA/Canada Forum, and the chance to reunite with some of the many
friends that Frances and I have made over the last few years. Hopefully you will be there with us for a
lot of good fellowship and great times. The Forum has many informative
seminars for all of us this year. We can hardly wait to hear this year’s
speakers; if they are in the same class as past speakers, they will be
exceptional, and you will be talking about them for years to come.
Two weeks after the USA/Canada Forum we will be headed for our
MD-19 Fall Forum in Lewiston, Idaho.
Please come and join us for more good fellowship.
In between
these two Forums we will be continuing our club visitations. We have been
doing a little work for Leader Dogs within our district. As you know, we have been passing around the
dog bowl to collect for Leader Dogs, and you all have been very generous with
your contributions. We are on our way to having 100% participation in
District C for Leader Dogs this year!
The planning
meetings for our Spring Conference have gotten under way, and from what we have
seen so far it is going to be a fun time for all. The lunch seating
problem has been solved so there will be seating for all who want to attend –
no limits, so we can shoot for the moon!
We are enjoying
our visits with all of you along the way and are looking forward to visits yet
to come. We will save some news for next month, so until then take care.
Yours in
Lionism,
Your
District Governor
Carl
J. Freeland

JIM KNIGHT, MD19’s COUNCIL CHAIRMAN
Jim Knight is now in
his third month as Council Chairman of Multiple District 19. In this capacity, CC Jim serves as the
facilitator for the MD19 Council of Governors and as the primary goodwill
ambassador for Lions clubs throughout Washington, British Columbia and Northern
Idaho.
This energetic Lion was born in Hamden,
Maine (near Bangor), and lived in several Northeastern states as he grew
up. Upon his graduation from high
school, he joined the US Air Force and was sent to Moses Lake, WA, in
1952. Moses Lake is close to Wenatchee,
where he met the love of his life; Jim and Donna have been married for 50
years. They have a son who lives in
Spokane and a daughter in Arlington, and two grandchildren, Leatha (19) and Joseph
(11).
Jim’s favorite hobby is model trains,
followed by model planes, boats and cars.
He also enjoys target shooting with his .22 pistol.
CC Jim has a wide
variety of work experience in addition to his time in the Air Force. While in school, he worked as a milkman, and
in a greenhouse and a grocery. As an
adult, he worked for Fentron Industries, was a superintendent for a
construction company, and a partner in a garage door company. In 1995 he retired after 21 years at
Boeing. He also has 21 years in the
Washington Air National Guard.

At the insistence of a “very persuasive” guy named Gordy Smith, Jim joined the Lake City Lions Club in the spring of 1975. He has been a Lion in Johnson City, NY and Lake Stevens, WA, and is currently a member of the Smokey Point Club Branch of the Arlington (WA) Lions Club. He has served in all major leadership positions at the club, zone and district levels of Lionism; and has been active at MD19 in the areas of Long Range Planning, Policy Manual, and The Border Crossing. His favorite service activity is the Northwest Lions Foundation for Sight & Hearing, and his favorite fundraising project is the Arlington Lions Model Show.
When asked what it takes to be a great
leader, this Lion's response was "first to be able to get the right people
to do the right jobs; to have faith that you can and will prevail; to have discipline,
determination and selflessness; to have the ability to channel ego needs away
from self and into the organization; to have great ambition for the
organization; and to have the capacity to groom successors for success, not
failure, thereby guaranteeing the future of the organization and not the
glorification of the leader".
He believes that LCI's attraction for potential new members lies in service opportunities, self-improvement, networking and social activities. A strong Lions Club will involve its members in all these meaningful activities, so that members feel their time is well spent doing things they enjoy.
The Fall Forum is one
such activity – be sure to take this opportunity to meet our MD19 Council
Chairman.

ANNUAL
APPLE SALE FUND-RAISER
|
The Olympia Host Lions Club
coordinates this wonderful way to help support Camp Leo for Children with
Diabetes. If your club doesn’t
participate, you can still help by purchasing a boxful of healthy snacks. Think applesauce, apple muffins, apple
fritters, caramel apples, and of course apple pie!
The price is still just $20 for a 40-lb box of apples delivered fresh from Wenatchee. There are two varieties to choose from: sweet Golden Delicious and crunchy Fuji. Get double the enjoyment – a fresh, tasty treat plus the pleasure of knowing you’ve helped send a kid to camp.
The ordering deadline is September
14th for Golden Delicious and October 6th for Fuji. Delivery will be in late September and
October.
And, if you’re looking for a
combination of camaraderie and light labor, come join the packing party when
the apples arrive! For more
information, contact Jan Norman at 360-459-5123 or Jannorman@aol.com.
